Why is psychoeducation important? How can it change business?
More and more people are talking about a 'lack of awareness' of psychology. Yet most of them are not aware of what psychology can actually do for them. That's the reason many would rather endure various problems, telling themselves 'that's life', instead of seeking help to work through them.
Since ancient times, people ate what nature offered and did what nature demanded, all of it governed by survival, social conventions and culture. Gradually, people moved past the basics, and our way of living came to be governed by far more complex things - industry, consumerism, comfort, prestige, and more.
While our anatomy remained the same, what we eat and do changed drastically, with little to no connection to our ancient ways. That deviation created a plethora of problems. To adapt, today we seek help from experts in modern science - doctors, dietitians, physiotherapists, dentists, and more. When it comes to knowledge, we actively try to stay up to date on physical health.
Mental health, on the other hand, was left behind, mostly because the science behind it matured slowly. Even today, people continue doing the same things over and over without realising that outcomes can improve with science's deepening understanding of the human mind.
Do you think this is true only for individuals? We're a quarter of the way through the 21st century, and yet businesses have been doing exactly the same thing. I'm not even talking about the mental health of their personnel. The current approach of organisations to improvement and problem-solving is largely focused on analysing and influencing human behaviour. What they are yet to realise is that human behaviour is a complex function of thoughts and emotions. Behaviour, thoughts and emotions together form the psychological layer underneath business problems such as human productivity, sales performance, employee retention, customer-centricity, upskilling, innovation, collaboration - the list goes on.
Basic psychoeducation can provide a good starting point for both individuals and businesses. It teaches how behaviour can be changed by managing thoughts and emotions. Experts in psychology - such as cognitive behavioural therapists - can train and work with them toward improvements and solutions to their most complex problems.
