Do you have to be an extrovert to perform in sales?

Extraversion often correlates with strong sales performance — that much tends to be true. So, is “hire the extroverts” a sound strategy?

Before getting into the business angle, let’s decode the psychology behind it. Persuasion, easy rapport-building and assertive communication — these may come more naturally to extraverted people. But “comes naturally” doesn’t mean they can only be possessed by someone with a particular nature. These are skills.

And skills can be built, through neuroplasticity — the brain’s lifelong capacity to adapt by forming and strengthening neural connections. A more introverted salesperson can often develop the same skills over time, on their own. With the right theory, tools and structured practice, that timeline can be shortened significantly.

Also, extraversion brings only part of the skill set required for a sales job. Active listening, resilience, empathy, objection handling, negotiation, etc. are other skills. Again, they’re learnable, just the same way.

Coming to the business angle, sales is one part of a much larger function — marketing — which spans product, pricing, market intelligence, branding, distribution, etc. Sales performance often depends as much on these adjacent functions as it does on the seller themselves. And for many marketing professionals, sales is where the career starts — the gateway into everything else marketing encompasses.

When hiring leans too heavily on extraversion, or when the skills that can be developed alongside it go untrained, organisations don’t just risk underperforming against quota. They risk losing good marketing talent early, before it ever gets the chance to grow into its potential. Therefore, such a hiring strategy can be a useful shortcut. But it’s rarely sustainable.

Through the science of cognitive behavioural psychology, your salespeople can stop attributing performance to their nature — and start building the skills that stay with them for a lifetime.
